We’ve taken security one step further with our PDF Stamping feature. By stamping each copy sold with the buyers’ name and order number, you’ll be preventing illegal sharing of your product as well as adding a personal touch. Peace of mind in just one click.

All you need to do is flick the PDF stamping switch on when you’re creating a new product, or ‘Edit’ an existing one and flick the switch there.

Your PDF will be stamped with the buyer’s name, so it can’t be duplicated anonymously. Here’s an example of what the PDF stamp would look like:

    Thank you!
Was hoping to get notified of the response but at least I thought to check back manually :)

  2. Tara Storozynsky

Hi, Brian! These are great questions!
    1. As of yet, we don’t have an option for merchants to specify what gets stamped with PDF stamping. The customer’s name and order number are what gets stamped with this feature.
    2. You can update a file by choosing to add/remove a new file. It’s easy to notify and grant access to customers who had purchased the older version of the file. This new file will also be stamped.

I hope this answers your question! Our exceptional CS team at [email protected] should be able to answer any other questions you have about digital security features. Thanks for reading FounderU and commenting!

    Hello, two questions:

    1. Is it possible to customize what gets stamped (their email address, for example)? Based on the comments over the last few years above, it doesn’t seem that way yet but wanted to check.

    2. If I update a file with a later version, or upload a new file, will that new file get stamped for an existing customer? Strange question — but this is currently a bug in Gumroad.

  4. Kristen DeCosta

Hey Ryan, thanks for the helpful comment! We’ve added in a screenshot of an example stamp into the post. Hope this helps!

  5. Ryan Flynt

Wondering if you could provide an example of the stamping in a screenshot of some kind so we can see what it looks like?

  6. Kristen DeCosta

Hi Fran, thanks for the suggestion, it sounds like a good idea! We will pass this along to our developer team.

  7. Fran

It would be wonderful to have the purchase DATE listed right after the buyer’s name in the PDF stamp. That way, a sort of “Use Agreement” could be established. If the “Use agreement” was limited to a fixed number of days, the seller could notify the buyer in advance, asking if they wanted to renew their “Use Agreement.” Possible additional revenue generator at best, and at least a little conscience poke.

  8. Carley

We’ve arirevd at the end of the line and I have what I need!

  9. Kristen

Hey Scott, the PDF stamping feature now only stamps the first page of an ebook. This may change in the future, though.

  10. scott

To clarify, the “how to sell an ebook using Selz” video states that the PDF stamping feature stamps EACH page with the buyer’s name. Is this true as of March 2016?

  11. Kristen

Hey Pablo, we’ll pass this onto our development team, so thanks for chiming in.

  12. Pablo

I agree with Jay. The transaction number should be printed on with some transparency on the content and in various parts of each page. Thus they can not eliminate it. This is important. The current system does not help me, because it is easy to remove. Please implement this system, it is very important to protect our works.

  13. Kristen

Hi Christie, thanks for checking in! The PDF stamping feature hasn’t changed, but I will definitely let our product manager know that this is still important to our community, so thanks kfor checking in.

“The best way is to stamp a unique transaction ID onto every page, or multiple pages. My other PDF Stamper plugin does this. That way, the customer gets a non-intrusive random number that can be used only by the seller to trace the buyer.”

  15. Kristen

Hey James, our links do expire, depending on the time limit a seller chooses. Right now, the max amount of time a buyer has access to the download page is 30 days with 20 attempts to download the item. This can be adjusted, depending on what a seller feels comfortable with.

  16. Kristen

Hey there, thanks for commenting! Our PDF stamping feature currently stamps only the first page of any PDF file.

  17. ash rex

ok so i finally decided ill use your service. I created a 1 page test pdf. It successfully watermarked it. I issued a free copy.

    So i loaded up a 5 page pdf……and i checked watermarked……and it never watermarked.

I tried everything but it had stopped watermarking!!!

  18. Kristen

Hey Nikki, sorry for the delay! Yep, the watermark is the same as the PDF stamping :) We’ve just changed the name – sorry for the confusion!

  19. James

Do you offer expiring download links so people can’t easily share the product download page link?

  20. Nikki Tester

Is the watermark the same as the PDF stamp? I don’t have a PDF stamp switch on my page. Is it an app ? Please let me know how I can access this
    Thanks for your awesome work
Selz is simply brilliant and you guys are so helpful

  21. Dave

Totally agree here. Initials and a receipt number on every page please.

  22. Geoff

Hi Estevan , thanks for the feedback. I’ll will pass the suggestion on to the team as we do take into account requests and feedback when designing features on Selz.

  23. Estevan

I totally agree with Jay and also with the security issue Shankha said before. Please in the future if you guys could work in their requests (that ins’t so hard to do) Selz could be the greatest digital selling platform ever!! Really looking forward to that =)

  24. Jay

I agree this feature does nothing to stop piracy, and it also penalizes the paying customers who might not want their real name plastered on the cover.

The best way is to stamp a unique transaction ID onto every page, or multiple pages. My other PDF Stamper plugin does this. That way, the customer gets a non-intrusive random number that can be used only by the seller to trace the buyer.

Please consider including this option. Otherwise this feature is not useful.

  25. Geoff

Hi Shankha, thanks for leaving a comment about PDF stamping. I will pass your suggestions on to our engineering team.

  26. Shankha Goswami

I tried this feature with an issue here (tried selling one) and the downloaded copy could be edited using Adobe Acrobat and the Stamp could be removed in about 1 minute and the PDF saved back without the stamp.

This will only be useful if after stamping the PDF is also made read only and also if the stamping is on at least 25% of the pages.

  27. Melissa

Hi Mariano, at this stage we only offer the default stamp which appears above – there’s no customisation available on it but thanks for the feedback :)

  28. Mariano Fernandez

can i choose the place of the stamp in the PDF pages?
    and the font and color?
or put two stamps in each page?

  29. Mave

Yes a water mark or the existing one on each page would be awesome.

  30. Geoff

Hi Yuri, to answer your questions. The PDF is stamped on the front page. Both Gumroad and Selz want to make it easier for online entrepreneurs to make a living online. One of the major differences is that Selz allows people to sell services as well as physical or digital products. Plus, with Selz, you can offer customers the choice of purchasing using a credit card or PayPal if using our PayPal unlimited app. There are millions of consumers who prefer to use PayPal to purchase online, so offering them the choice can help to increase your sales. Hope this helps, you can email us at [email protected] if you have any further questions.

You can read more about the differences here:

  31. Yuri

    I like
However, what is the difference between you and I am trying to decide which one to choose, but you two are very similar.
Also, can you stamp every single page? or do you just do front pages

  32. john

I haven’t built my site yet but a watermark would be fantastic. I’m extremely interested if that is an option??

  33. Melissa

    Hi Wilson,
Interesting idea, I’ll pass that one on!

  34. wilson

It´s a great idea to have our ebooks secure from thief.

Is there any chance to have this kind of stamps but like a watermark in a random positions of every page?
