We’ve been searching through the most popular ecommerce platforms to see where they line up in terms of both features and pricing. Today we’re looking at SendOwl and alternatives to SendOwl.
One important note: SendOwl is for digital products only.
Unlike Selz, where you can sell digital products, physical products, and services, SendOwl only enables you to sell digital products.
To understand what SendOwl does and doesn’t do, let’s take a deeper look at the platform itself.
SendOwl claims to be “The only ecommerce platform that cares about conversion rates, ease of use, and owls.” I’m not entirely sure what owls have to do with ecommerce, so let’s focus on their bird-free claims.
SendOwl claims to be optimized for selling. This means that they offer features like upsells, abandoned cart emails, discounts, and onsite checkout.
Ease of Use
SendOwl boasts ease of use, and I can tell by their dashboard, it’s pretty simple:

Selz, the Ecommerce Platform for Growing Businesses
Business News Daily calls Selz the “best ecommerce software for digital downloads” and Best Company says that “Their straightforward and step-by-step build out process allows even the most inexperienced person to create stunning and functional online stores.”
If we’re looking for alternatives to SendOwl, both claim to provide simple selling.
When looking at Selz’s dashboard, it’s obvious that there are many more features. They also have a little chat pop up welcoming you, and inviting you to sign up for a set-up session. This is great for someone just getting their feet wet with ecommerce.
Features are a major difference between SendOwl and Selz. SendOwl doesn’t provide a store or website for you. Their offering is the option to add buy buttons and products to your existing site.
SendOwl does have “landing pages” for your products, in the sense that once your buyer clicks the “buy now” button, they’re led through a checkout:

Now, let’s take a look at what Selz has to offer.

So, with Selz, you have a lot of options for everything, including buy buttons. They’re easy to customize too, making it simple to edit for your branding.
All of this was made without a single line of code. Selz obviously stands up to their claims of being simple and powerful for growing businesses.
Of course, it depends on what you need for your online store, but if you’re someone that is looking for a full ecommerce solution, Selz is the right choice.
Giving your customers the maximum number of payment options is really important.
Payment processing has the potential to be complicated. Paypal is a fantastic option, and both SendOwl and Selz offer that as a processor, but if you’re looking for all the other options, you’ll want to dig a little deeper.
Selz offers its own fully integrated payment gateway called “Selz Pay,” meaning they actually process payments for you, making payments more streamlined. Selz Pay also comes with zero transaction fees.
All you have to do is get approved through Selz, which doesn’t take long. Once you’re approved, you’ll be able to start selling immediately and accepting all the major credit cards.
SendOwl doesn’t offer integrated payment processing. You can hook up your PayPal account, but if you want to use something else, then you have to use your own account with another provider like Stripe, BitPay or Authorize.net.
This isn’t inherently bad, but it does mean that you have another account to manage, pay for and connect.
When it comes to payments, Selz takes the cake. If you’re okay with having another payment provider, or if you already do, then SendOwl isn’t that difficult to set up.
But it’s just more complication to deal with for no obvious reward. That doesn’t save your business time or money.
Upsells and Conversions
To understand which is best for upsells, you must first understand what an upsell is.
When you upsell, you offer something in addition to what your customer is already buying. For example, you can say “for just $4.99 more, get 20 more ounces of protein powder.” This gives your customer a quick and wise decision to make and it can increase your sales.
SendOwl offers to upsell in this exact way and you can add an upsell to any or all products.
Selz has a different version of upselling, in which your other products are offered after checkout. This is in the customer’s receipt, where it offers them your top-selling products.
There’s also an option to add a discount code to the receipt, meaning it gives you an additional chance to win returning business.
Another way that Selz helps convert users is through abandoned cart emails. Abandoned cart emails are proven to increase sales. The way they work is by emailing your customer (who is logged in on your site) when they add something to their cart, but do not purchase it.
It’s a gentle nudge reminding them of their intention to buy and typically results in a sale that you may have otherwise lost.
This is such an important feature. This is your business we’re talking about, so when something isn’t working or you have a question you really need support.
On this front, Selz wins hands down. Selz provides 24/7 live chat support on all paid plans, 365 days a year. SendOwl only provides email support during office hours.
Bandwidth and Storage
Storage may not be something you worry about yet, but for those of you who are selling videos, ebooks, and other digital products, storage is something to consider.
When it comes to SendOwl, they have limited bandwidth and product limits that Selz doesn’t.
“Every SendOwl plan comes with a monthly allocation of bandwidth. If during your monthly billing cycle you use all the bandwidth we charge $0.20 per GB.”
Selz, on the other hand, offers unlimited products and lets you upload up to 50 files (in just one product!) with a maximum of 15GB per file.
This is a major upgrade from SendOwl if you sell large files like video.
Now that you’ve had some time to look over the features and figure out if Selz is a good alternative to SendOwl, let’s talk about pricing.
When it comes to pricing, this can be a make or break for your business, and you can see that the Selz monthly plans are higher than SendOwl’s.
That being said, Selz annual pricing offers more value for a lower price point. If you’re spending more on add ons to run your business, then your margins start to shrink.
It’s also important to consider the other costs you’re taking on when using SendOwl.
Selz offers features that have greater opportunities for saving as you scale.
For example, if you need a store and payment processing, you’ll be paying additionally for hosting (which can be around $10-20 a month) and for payment processors (which will take a percentage or charge a monthly fee).
So, even though SendOwl’s Standard plan is $15 a month, you could end up paying $35 (or more) for all the features that Selz offers for $29 with their Basic plan.
SendOwl offers a simple way to sell digital products. But when you compare it to Selz, SendOwl is missing several important and powerful features that most small businesses can’t go without.
